There's no point in having great old architecture in Cleveland if no one is walking through it.

So, it was a thrill to visit Fifth Street Arcades recently. The former Colonial (1898) and Euclid (1911) Arcades are showing extra signs of life with newer stores, the winter presence of Downtown Farmers Market on Fridays, and a young, genial-looking crowd.

Step in, especially on a cold, snowy day. The light is still bright under the vaulted skylights, a sign that those late-Victorians knew how to live. Bright lights in restaurant offerings include the New York style pizza of Vincenza's, and the organic vegetarian offerings Pure & Supreme Cuisine.
